Poll Question
I have been an avid nickel collector for the past several years. In going through a box last evening I came across 3 War Nickels which was the most ever in one box for me. How many have you found in one box ($100)?

Just went through my second box this morning and found 2. 1943P and 1944D. Don't find many D's often so I was a little excited when I saw the big D over the dome.

Onto the 3rd box.

I found 11 in a box once, but as many folks on the forum know I worked on a project most of last year that took me through 162 $100 boxes of nickels. My goal is to go through 500 boxes; I'm just taking a break from it for now to concentrate on cents and halves for awhile. But, took a break once I completed the Jefferson set from circulation (finally found a 50D in the 8100th roll)

That is a magnificient task that you completed. I have been going through boxes for about 4 or 5 years. I'm not certain on my count but so far the only 2 nickels I have yet to find in circulation are the 1939D and 1950D.

Since joining this forum I've been reading more about error coins so I've been looking harder at each nickel I've been going through. This morning I found a 1975D with a very odd placement of the mint mark and also a 1940S which looks like the die was wore out. I just don't have a camera that takes close enough pictures of the coins.

Thanks for sharing with me.

You know I am watching! LOL!

You guys going through these nickels should not overlook an ordinary date. You really ought to look for some of these that are extraordinary examples of common dates for eye appeal and strike quality and put aside these too. A War Nickel is nice but I will take a 1982 P with 5 steps in MS 64 over another very fine 1943 P or even a G-4 1907 V nickel any day. Of course they are great finds as well.

A year ago I got $44 worth of nickels from a bank in which I found 13 War Nickels: 1942P, 1944P, 1945P, 1943P x 7, and 1943S x 3.

I've never bought a box because I'm afraid I won't be able to lift it. I'm an old woman with a bad back.

In the late-'50's it wasn't too unusual to get a dozen in a roll. I didn't care too much for the ungly, dirty looking things in those days. They were silver but they were debased and "contaminated".

Now they get melted down to make contacts for electrical switching equipment.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

I should elaborate on my nickel collection.

I have been collecting them seriously for about the past 5 years. I keep everything from 1960 and back and hold onto everything eye appealing from 1961-current.

I have Harris & Co. tubes for each year and when the tube fills up I pack it into a coin wrapper. If you were to come over to my house you would certainly run into my nickel paraphenelia.

I was just curious if my War Nickel "Strikes" were on par with the other individuals who were going through boxes.

Thanks.

Sounds familiar meckl9, I didn't vote since I don't do roll searches anymore. I am getting new glasses soon though, if they work well, maybe I'll give it a shot.

Coppernickeldaddy.

I intend to start keeping track from the 5 boxes I started with today.
I went through the 3rd box and found 0 War Nickels but did discover the Liberty.

My plans are to go through the 4th and 5th box tonight and then update the post.

Thanks for again for sharing your details.

4th box contained zilch!! It actually yielded the least pre 60 coins as well. Odd thing about the box was that it had no operator stamp or date on it as to when it was boxed.

On to the 5th box. Once I'm finished with that I have 5 more boxes of pennies to start straining my eyes with.

Hope everyone remembered to turn your clocks ahead!
