Very new to searching quarter bank rolls and ran across this nice guy today. I have two weaknesses in this particular situation. I don't know quarters and not that great at grading. Is this worth keeping or just a nicer than average bank roll find, to turn loose, for someone else to find? I was thinking low MS but need some feedback from folks who actually know. Thanks for looking. -makecents-

To determine an MS coin learn the high points of the design. Those are the areas you will see a break in the luster. For quarters you will see this break in the hair curl, tops of the wings, the eagles thighs and claws. Are you seeing any of that with your coin? If so, It will at best be AU and for most modern quarters that is just a hold filler till you find a better one.

Thanks, guys! Back to the wild it goes. Thanks, captainkurt, for the pointers, the high points have definitely lost their luster.

Certainly better than average condition for a circulation find of a 58 year old coin.
Your observations based on @captain helpful description confirm this is alas at best an AU coin.

Looks like an AU-58 slider to me.

Thanks, everybody! I'll start following some threads, to see if I can hopefully learn how to grade. This is something I've never taken time to do.

I'm at the high AU end. Consider keeping it as a good album hole filler until better comes along--unless you already have a pile of MS '65s...

Now, Cladking could come by and say that some years of modern quarters are actually worth saving in problem free AU. '82 and '83 in particular are even worth saving in EF and above. There seems to be a shift in marketability of low BU, AU and select EF modern quarters in the last 10 years.

ijn1944, thanks for replying. I do not collect, at least in a direct manor, no albums. Unless it has some higher reason, at least in my mind, they now go away, back to the world. As far as MS-65 coins, not sure I have any. I occasionally buy uncirculated rolls but typically search bank rolls, as you know. Just been curious about the grading as of late.

captainkurt, I had a past "Lincoln Master", advise me of the same. There are certain years of the zincolns to watch for high end coins, worth more than many coppers but hard to come by, obviously why they are worth more. Thank you for your help.
