Okay, so fill me in here. I have never heard of the mint actually waffling a Lincoln Cent, but then I never really asked that question. These two were picked up from a dealer yesterday for a couple bucks, as I found them interesting and wanted to ask this very question. Did the mint do this to any Lincolns?

The first coin still has the date visible with some twisting in the light, and it is 1996-D. I couldn't figure out the second coin at all, but thought maybe I could see a 0 in one area. For all I know it's not even a Lincoln Cent.

Any insight on whether this is just some chuckleheads with a press of some kind or something the mint actually did would be appreciated.

Cool look on that second one. They don't look like any waffling I've seen before and appears they where flattened as well so I would say hijinks is the culprit.

That's a good question.

On one hand, why would they take the time to waffle a Lincoln Cent? On the other hand, why does the government do all sorts of things that don't make sense?

Check out my counterstamped Lincoln Cent collection:

Not chuckleheads, but rather mint cancellation as mentioned. Here are a few prior threads that may be of some interest and provide background.

I'm in the knucklehead camp.

I've never seen either one of the patterns on waffled coins before. In fact, I'm not sure why you would even need to put such a pattern on a coin before waffling. Seems like an unnecessary extra step.

Also, as already pointed out, they look flattened and slightly elongated which also isn't typical of waffled coins and was probably done when the pattern was pressed into the coins.

Read the replies, followed the links and from what I see all the mint waffled coins have a certain look to them, which is not what these look like. And still I didn't see a single image of a mint waffled cent in the mix. I'm calling question still open and hope for more comments and maybe at some point what an official mint-waffled Lincoln Cent would look like. If they exist there must be at least one slabbed by NGC out there as I see other denominations in their holders often enough.

The waffle of the coins was change according by the internal studies. In same year all the coins has same waffle for all the Mints. The coins which made surface do not come from the Mint, those come from workers in the recycle facilities (sub-contractants of the Mint). No historic patterns from the Mint it is available in order to stop the possibility of counterfeits.
