jmkendall Pillar of the Community United States 1590 Posts	Posted 03/22/2023 11:29 pm This is actually....well not common...but not so rare as you think; in relative terms. I have well over 600 woodies and I probably have a couple of dozen that have this graining. You have to understand that when the plate is poured you can have pure copper; pure tin; pure zinc and varius alloys of brass and bronze. All have their own properties and as the pour cools the varius components cool and seperate at different rates. I once did a study on rates at which woodies are found within all LWC and was going to publish my findings as well as some incidentals such as the actual mintages of SF and Denver coins ( which were only estimates in the Mint directors report) but when I mentioned it here I got a few "who cares" and I shelved the project.
