I was going through some wheat pennies and this one popped up. It looks like it might be a broken die because the 1 looks to be struck under the 9. Or is it just damage? Let me know what you think.

Thanks!

Looks like a lamination defect, and possibly a folded over peel.

I don't know if you'd call that a cracked planchet or a lamination, or maybe both? but it's the planchet that's flawed, not the die. The 1 in the date on these is the same length as the 4s, so what looks like a piece of a 1 is way too long to be from the 1. Somebody else will probably have a better theory but I'm guessing it's displaced or folded over metal from the planchet flaw that happens to look like a 1.

@Zurie beat me to it...

@zurie/ @kbbpll It looks like under the 9 could be the mint mark all messed up perhaps? None the less is this an error worth keeping out? I haven't been able to find any examples.
Thanks.

It's not a mintmark. It's probably a retained lamination peel from that thin strip of metal running horizontally left of the date. Likely broke off and folded over as the die struck the planchet. Worth keeping, but not particularly valuable.

We see quite a few lams here, but they are still fun to find. You could save this in a 2x2 until an even nicer example comes your way.

Lamination and 2x2 worthy.

Yes, lamination issue--nice example. Wonder what the reverse looks like?
