My grandparents were musicians that worked in clubs and bars. Whenever we went to see them perform, grandpa would give me red quarters to buy his cigarettes and for the jukebox between sets.

In the '60s my dad acquired a couple of slot machines - actual one-armed bandits. One fed with nickels, the other with quarters. The money boxes still had change in them, and there were quite a few red quarters in that one machine.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Yes. I ran across a few many, many years ago--nothing in the last 15 years or so.

Yes, I have seen many, but not recently.

They were also used for jukeboxes.

Saw them all the time in the 80s and always wondered since they were always red. And now I know-thanks!

Also painted quarters and used in bars to run the juke box. When the vender would empty the coins, he would give back the red painted coins. (Back in the day)

Yes my family owned a restaurant in the 60s. Used them in the jukebox all the time to get the place jumping.
