When looking at my Red Book which is one year old (2022) it list a 1943 s in ms 63 as worth 20$ and a ms 65 as 3500$ is that real and why the big jump in such a sort distance. Sorry I'm talking about a Wheat cent (steely)

Red Book is a great general guide, but don't rely on it for pricing. Look to another source, such as PCGS, where you can see population counts and recent auction prices: https://www.PCGS.com/coinfacts/coin/1943-1c/2711

When there is a big jump in the upper-tier grades, you can be assured of rarity and popularity.

Here's the correct link for the 1943-S (other was for a 1943-P):

It's probably a misprint, I would say an MS65 is $35 maybe $40 not $3500

Looking at "prices sold" on ebay can also be instructive.

At BEST the RedBook is an out-of-date RETAIL price. We're talking about a NICE coin shop (one that has actual lights over the cases, chairs without duct tape, and carpets that have been cleaned this year not last century), not that scuzzy place in the strip mall between the dry cleaners and a Subway shop, where the owner's cigar is about the same age as the owner.

Seriously, the prices are generally created from a survey done at the end of a year. Those go into the book, which is published in April, but dated the following year.

So the 2023 book came out in April 2022 with prices from October-December 2021.

For values use ebay sold values,http://m.numismedia.com/rarecoinprices.htm
the gray sheet and Heritage Auctions. The TPGs values kinda favors their own slabs so the values might be listed as a bit high.

Red Book value age a great guide, buy the titled year comes out almost a full year before its date on the book implies. For instance, the 2024 Red Book will be released in 8 days. I think the estimates in the book represent the values at time of printing. It can also show historical values when used in conjunction with previous issues to show trends.

As stated, ebay sold listing is your best bet for current 'demand value' of a coin or note.

I like the Mega RedBook for a lot of reasons (I've bought every edition so far), but I don't pay attention to the pricing information. As others have mentioned there are a lot of other more up-to-date and more accurate information sources out there.

I use Greysheet bid prices and recent auction prices from Heritage, GreatCollections and other major auction sites for my main source. If you don't have a Greysheet subscription you can find the up-to-date CDN pricing through Heritage; look for the Resources/Coin Resources/Price Guide for Numismatists link.

I use ebay sold listings and the PCGS site. It seems on average PCGS prices are about 20% higher than actual ebay sold items. BTW, I tried to PM you but your email is apparently disabled. You are one of the winners of my 1500th post contest.

So do I, I pay special attention to any that sold with an offer that was accepted. That tell me what people are willing to pay for an item vs what the seller wanted.
