I copied some pics from ebay. The letter transfer, part of Edith, is by Washington's ear. However,
1. One pic shows lines behind the ear not letters, pic five. One seller says this is a clash but I don't think so. To me it may be Mint file lines trying to hide the clash? Any thoughts?
2. There are markings above the reverse mountain, pic six, some ebay sellers say this is a clash, others say they are feeder fingers marks, I don't know. Some are calling it "fire on the mountain. Any thoughts?
3. Do you suppose those who write error books will give this clash a name/number? Morgan and Peace dollars with letter transfer clash have VAM numbers.
Are there more than one quarter example on this thread? If so there appears to be a die clash issue on the one image. The other may have been an attempt to remove the devices from the die by polishing. If that is the case, some of the other devices may appear smaller in size on the polished die example. (Or a light FFD example on the second coin)
The ones I have are the EDITH clash. Didn't even see the fire on the mountain. Looks like what Coop says an attempt to polish something off the die. I don't know what, there's nothing to clash with on the obverse. There seems to be a lot of Feeder Finger Damage in back of the ear on the last 3 or 4 quarters.
Thanks for the overlays coop. The examples I posted came from ebay, there's others listed. In the ebay search search line I typed "2023 quarter Edith clash."
Really nice clash in those first two images. Thanks for sharing this one.
I like that the reverse image is showing up on some of the "busiest" parts of the obverse around the ear.
No one has pointed out that the back of Washingtons head/hair clashed on the reverse. It is the N-S curved line in the bay formed by her hair, to the left of EDITH. That's pretty strong as well.
Matching markers (die gouges, die scrapes. die dots, etc.) on the coin with the clash and the coin with the heavy die scrapes would confirm if they are one and the same die pair.
Words of encouragement are one of the major food groups. We need to consume them regularly to thrive and grow.
Here's one with a lot more clash showing than others I've seen. Looks like early die stage of the clash. Notice the clash areas in front of Washington's forehead, nose, mouth, by the eye, the letter H by the ear is very visible. There may be some slight clashing on the reverse but the seller's pics aren't clear. This sold today on ebay. I bid $51 but someone else got it the last few seconds for $52. The ones with less clash showing some letter transfer have been selling on ebay for $10 - $25.
That one looks like it's a different reverse die, no fire on the mountain. On mine, the clash on the rev in the river is just barely showing. There is a clash on her chin straight down from the right eye. I opened up another bag today and found 1 more obv clash. This bag was dated 2 days before the first one I opened that had 5. Also I found 3 that had the fire on the mountain, and no obv clash. So I'm concluding there are more than 2 die parings.
