That's possibly correct, looks like the copper migrated in the metal to the surface.

I'm seeing post-strike damage--environmentally-caused staining/corrosion, given the images posted. Only my opinion.
I see you're in the Vegas area. Suggest taking these examples to the most reputable local coin shops you can find and ask for additional opinions.

pics way too large to assess, the board recommends 800x800 pixel size so viewable on most equipment

I'm confused by all the various coins. We want to help but the real coins versus comparison coins have my head spinning.I don't have a clue on what you have versus what you pulled off some internet site.
Please post clear photos of both sides of the coin you have questions about - then we can go from there.

@ jvcv0, If your question is regarding the very first Nickel images on the top: that is definitely due to environmental damage, whatever caused the staining does not matter, your coin is not worthless, it is worth the face value. And as mentioned above your follow up comparisons are more confusing than helping.

Quote: If your question is regarding the very first Nickel images on the top: that is definitely due to environmental damage, Yeah the one on top. Can you elaborate on what makes you think it's PMD instead of error? I posted it because I did research to the best of my abilities and thought improper annealing was most plausible. But if it isn't I would like to know how you know so I don't waste my time on such "errors" the future. Thanks

I'm in agreement with @Chase that your coin is stained from some form of environmental damage. Quote:Can you elaborate on what makes you think it's PMD instead of error? Sure - To my eye your coin exhibits a splotchy appearance with some localized areas really dark and others lighter in tone. The 'toning' is random and inconsistent on both sides and the edge. A truly improperly annealed coin has in general a very consistent look across the surfaces since the annealing error affected all of the coin and not just random locations. Hope that makes sense.

I have to agree - I was apparently confused with my first response, I thought that the real coppery one was your with different lighting. Sorry, my bad - I need to change my estimate to environmental toning/damage. after looking at the newer images.

Your coin is not as the coin you compare. you has some tone of red-cooper but is not. Just environment damage.
