Physical gold at a reasonable price over spot is drying up. Accumulating British sovereigns is normally easy to do. My normal go to at bullionexchanges is dry. Bought sovereigns from APMEX (my backup source) and even their price was a bit more than usual.

Liberty Coin on their home site and their ebay store have descent prices. I like them, no problems with purchases.

Looking at APMEX right now, Swiss 20F's are 9.1% over spot and sovereigns 7.3% over spot. My go-to Canadian $100 1/2 oz are at 5.9% over spot. For the 1 oz, maple leafs 5.4% over and krugerrands 4.6% over. Liberty isn't too much different - 7.3% on the 20F's and 8.1% on the sovereigns.

One thing that was jaw-dropping at Liberty was their pricing on the US 1/2 oz gold content commemorative medals. Only 0.8% over spot. I wonder if this is a mistake. APMEX has these priced at 5.9% over spot, the same as the Canadian $100's. IMO these are way better than bars because they're a sovereign issue. Even the lowest cost Asahi ounce is 1.9% over spot.

Gold percentages don't seem outlandish, especially compared to anything silver. What is outlandish is the price of gold right now.

Wouldn't that be because the commemorative medals are only .900 gold and Liberty is probably about right and APMEX is too rich?

Noticed another thing about Liberty recently. Some items ship from outside CA and their insurance co probably had a sit down talk with them. They started using FEDEX instead of USPS and they really beefed up their packaging.

The medals contain 1/2 oz pure gold. I think it's because the medals are an obscure short time issue, not because they're 90%. Other coin gold (sovereigns, 20F's, pre 1933 US) prices to its content.

I have had too many courier and mailbox thefts to use home delivery anymore. If the seller can't ship to my PO box I don't buy from them.

Liberty is a good outfit to deal with, occasionally they have sales that are great, but stock can be low on a day to day basis although I haven't checked with them in the last year or so. The commemorative gold such as the medals struck in the 1970s typically have a very low markup over spot, and may be the best true bullion play, but the demand is low. I favor the British sovereigns and Prussia 20 Marks due to the approx 1/4 oz increments and "reasonable" markup over spot, although the latter can be tough to find in quantity.

My LCS sells most a lot of gold like sovereigns at spot or a small amount over. This of course does not apply to the modern 999 gold like Maples, because they have to pay more than bullion from their supplier. Mind you, they don't have a regular supply of the cheaper gold-it depends on what comes in from customers. Sometimes a lot, sometimes none.

yeah, since january i'd had my eye on a few different gold coins & bullion items, but I opted to turn the dollars I had aside for it into silver coins for my 7070, i'll pass on buying gold for now, maybe there'll be a dip I can buy later..

Saw a few common raw half eagle pre 1933's at my LCS today. $650 in VF, or about 30% over melt. At least they had some in stock.

The last coin I bought there was a polished 1843 eagle for $900 a year ago. A melter, but interesting because it's a better date. Today it would be over $1200.
