Machine Doubling flattens/alters the devices on the tops/sides of the devices. (Depending on the hop and how high it happens post strike. These are striking issue. A doubled die is caused by a doubled die, that would strike the coin. The difference?
Machine Doubling reduces the size of the devices. On hub doubling the devices are enlarged in size:

Note on your coin, only some areas are affected. If this were a doubled die, then other devices would also be affected. Also coin contact in circulation will alter devices. So anything done post strike, is not a doubled die.
Machine Doubling can happen on doubled dies, but
Machine Doubling doesn't make a doubled die. (Only suffers from it just like normal dies)

Note the date devices are showing a doubled die on these images of 4
DDO's? But note the yellow arrows. Note they are pointing to areas that were altered post strike by
Machine Doubling. Note the mintmarks? All affected by MD. But on a doubled die pre 1990, the die hub processes were one step of die creation. The mint marks are added in a later step. So when you see the MD on both the date and the mintmarks on the pre1990 dies, then it is always
Machine Doubling. (Normal or on a doubled die)
Machine Doubling is never part of a doubled die. Only hub doubling creates a doubled die.
Machine Doubling is an alteration post strike.
"A doubled die is caused by hub doubling on a die!" Machine Doubling and die wear affects just one side of the devices. (This can happen on die wear and
Machine Doubling on both sides of the devices.) But hub doubling will be seen on the center areas of the devices. Spread makes that area wider on the devices.

Note how much wider these devices are compared with a normal die example?

So looking for doubled dies, don't concentrate on the outside/inside edges of the devices. Look at the centers of the devices. There is where you will see spread it the coin you are looking at is from a doubled die. Train your eyes, on what to see on doubled dies, and your eyes will spot it a lot quicker and you will be less distracted by looking on the wrong areas to find a doubled die.
CoopHome:
How can I spot doubled dies a lot easier? train your eyes by searching how the hub doubling looks on the coins you are searching. know what to look for by searching the sites to see what to look for. then your eyes will see what is/or is not a doubled die. otherwise you are searching blindly.
