Hi there, I have spent days trying to find a nickle like this, in the process I have learned quite a bit about die clashes, die breaks, Cud's, bisecting something or others and more. I have seen some subtle examples. This coin appears to have many different minting flaws mentioned, especially if you look closely and magnify the pics... but nothing about it is subtle. Can anyone tell me if I can sell this and retire? Much appreciated, I am driving myself crazy trying to figure this out. Jg *** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. It's very important to have in the title. ***

one more observation...
In all the die clash photos I have seen the reverse image is upside down on the obverse.
on my coin it is right side up. I havent seen a die clash where is isn't upside down.
Now it is totally possible that I am mistaken here but please advise.
THANKS!
Jg

Can you turn the reverse right side up (photo). Oldgrouchyguy maybe correct it can see the the leftover glue from tape as if an impression was left of the reverse coin on the obverse if you look closely you can see the fine lines from where tape used to be. You may have some die crashes on the reverse but other than that I don't see anything. I'm sure the other experts will weigh in when they blow up the picture they may see the same thing, who knows. Others are way better than I am
You did make me giggle about the retirement LOL we all hope for that someday.

It's an intaglio impression, which means IF it were struck at the Mint like that, another struck coin would have had to be flipped around, placed exactly on top as you see it, and pounded into an already struck coin... there are Flip-Over Double Struck coins, in all Series, but the images aren't intaglio. Intaglio images you'll find with Brockage strikes-a whole different ballgame, so to speak

Hi All,
Thanks for the info but I am not sure what you mean by tape or what the significance of tape would be.
Can you elaborate please?
Also what is the feature to the right of the obverse that includes the Y from libertY as well as the 197 from 1974?
Thanks, Jg

Impressions of coins are made on other coins using epoxy, or sometimes the sticky residue from some tapes. I would think maybe epoxy on this one, some of which has chipped away (or maybe was never on the Y-197 area to begin with)

Oh,
Are you suggesting some kind of counterfitting?
I suppose it is possible but honestly I dont get that vibe from the in person coin. Maybe the photos arent doing it justice, they are just from my cheap phone.
Or maybe someone did something with epoxy but the coin is smooth to the touch with no discernable residue. I have no idea but this coin was part of my parents estate from the 70's so it would have been done sometime back then if faked.

Looks like glue. Try a soak in acetone.

looks like it was glued to another nickel. A long soak in Acetone will tell you pretty quickly.

Thanks for the tips.
I will do an acetone soak. Are we talking about just putting the nickle in a bowl with nail polish remover?
If so I will give it a try tomorrow and post the result.
Thank You!

Yes 100% acetone. You can get it at a paint store or Home Depot.

thank you!
curious, if this isn't epoxy or adhesive, could this coin be valuable?
and if so do you think valuable like "take this job and shove it" or valuable like "I bought a 6 pack for an old nickle I found"?
I will post the pics of the process.
Thanks again!

It's going to be the glue or something of the sort, don't get your hopes up!
