Hello everyone,
New to the community and I need some help! Ive had this 1974 D for some time now, always looking for any information on it but always come to a dead end, its 3.1g non magnetic and I dont think it plated because you can kinda see the peeling coming off and making the bottom into a brown penny. I run my fingers over it and its dosent come off unles you kinda scrape it but deff not trying that its not sticky nor rough its actually pretty smooth and dosent feel odd or diff from any ither penny, this is the exact condition of when I found it! I actually found it while penny roll hunting and kept it stored hoping I would find out more about it but no luck! I'm sending some coins in the next days to PCGS and cannot decide if I should send it in or not So here I am, who can help me out? I will be very appreciated for all the help! Thanks everyone and have a great day!!

Without saying anything else it looks to me it was used as an experiment when they attempted to turn it into a gold coin that failed. Others will weigh in soon.

Paint or some kind of coating for sure. Where it is coming off looks like a normal cent.

Do not send it in,it is PMD. Maybe paint or nail polish.

It doesn't really matter what it is or how it was done, the fact that it could not have
happened during the striking of the coin means it is damage.

Possibly paint that has peeled off the surface of the coin. It was altered post strike. Not a plus for a coin.
