I've been out of the game for a while as far as purchasing coins. Started up again and got a major key left in my set.

I am unwilling to grade this coin.

I have never seen any coin that looks like this, that grades F-12, with rims that look like MS65+.

Rim design looks nothing like any of the examples for bust half dollars shown in Photograde, in the range F-12 to MS-65+

nice strong date and LIBERTY as well as the reverse lettering. weak obv strike and reverse which is typical for the series.

i'd call it VF30 and probably would grade VF20 because they are idiots

sel_69l - wow nice range

I'll say VF-30 as well.

Definitely some central strike weakness, I'd say VF-35.

Major key? The key (or are you going for a 17/4?) I'll go VF-25, though I have not looked at a lot of 15s to understand more about the strike. Interesting circ cam look to the obverse.

Obverse helps carry this one. Obv VF30, rev just makes VF. I'm at a solid VF25.

Eye appeal will push it to VF-30.

Congratulations, jpbone, that is a very nice example of a scarce coin.

Lovely VF-30. Grading company could have graded it lower because TPGs struggle with strike weakness. I like the look of a crisp early die state. Great pickup!
Suffering from bust half fever.

Nice looking piece that could go anywhere in the VF range. Does appear softly struck so VF+ sounds right.

Thanks guys. This is the most expensive coin I've ever bought and I've considered sending it back for a more well struck example. The cameo on the obverse got me. not sure what to do.

Wow, this is one of the dates I was never able to get when putting a Bust Half set together. I am envious. Nice VF-30.

I found an NGC slabbed 1815/2 Capped Bust Half on Google Images.

The rims on the coin that is the subject of this thread
do not look anything like the rims on the above mentioned coin.

I am definitely not knowledgeable on this series, and need some basic education.

sel_69I - one must consider the issues of producing coins in this era. strike problems, die issues, planchet problems. you are going to have coins that like this one where you have strike issues so the deeper devices on the dies are not going to be fully struck. the pressure on this one appears to be stronger around the bottom of the coin and weaker at the top thus the difference in denticles where some are completely missing. in this case from K10-K2
