I was at one of my local dealers today and asked if they would be willing to trade some ASE's for some that I have doubles of, He said he would but I would have to pay $1-$2 plus my ASE. Do you think it's a good deal or should I not bother?

That would depend on your goals and desires.
If you are want the dates he has you are really only paying a 5-10% premium as opposed to keeping your doubles and paying the entire cost of getting the one's you want to get.
Those of us with OCD would think it a small premium to fill those darn holes!

I think you'd be better off selling your duplicate ASE's and simply purchasing the ones you need. Your dealer already has a mark-up on them and he is demanding that you simply add to his mark up. Assuming no premium dates, mints, etc as long as yours sell for as much or more than the ones you need, you should come out on the good end of this deal.

You can always try to trade any doubles for the ones you want on the BUY/SELL/TRADE section in this forum.

I look at it as the dealer is charging $1-$2 more as part of his transaction cost. Every transaction a dealer does has a cost associated with it, so expecting a "like for like" straight up trade is being unreasonable IMO. At the very least, if the dealer is following the tax rules, then he has to record this transaction as a sale to the customer with the associated sales tax, so the $1-$2 charge would cover that. So in my opinion, what the dealer is asking is 100% fair. It's not like your trading coins with your local coin club members...you are conducting a business transaction with a dealer. Hope this helps explain why the dealer is asking for the $1-$2 per ASE.

Do you think it's a good deal or should I not bother? Might be me but I'm not exactly clear as to this deal. $1-$2 plus your ASE? What is it exactly? $1, $2 or something in between? Is this for each one or for several? I really don't like dealers that are vague as to what the deal really is. I'm not sure what your trading so might be OK or might be a complete rip off. I'd pass on this deal.

Quote: Most states do not charge sales tax for coins and bullion I'm not sure what the rules are from state to state, but here in Wisconsin they do tax them. So the only ways around paying tax are to either have a valid resellers permit, buy at coin shows, or break the law. Either way, tax or not, my original point about each transaction costing the dealer something holds. If people want to do straight up trades, do it with your local coin club, but dont expect dealers to do so. If some dealers do it, that's cool and a nice gesture but I would never expect my dealer to do so.

I dont like vagueness either, but I dont see where a $1 difference is a deal breaker or a rip off. I would just ask the dealer for the exact terms he expects and either do the deal, negotiate or walk away. It doesn't need to be any more complicated than that.
