Could the right amount of heat raise the copper plating off the zinc?

'Surgical'-like application of heat on the obverse, it would appear. Perhaps effort taken to 'protect' the reverse?

Heat, the coin lays on a large cold surface, stone, concrete, anvil, quick application of heat only damages the one side.
