I see this all the time where the die is considered in its late state but the mint mark does not seem to be affected

Does anyone know why?
Does the mint re-punch the mint mark?

*** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark to Title. It's very important to have in the title. ***

Please post full, large images of the obverse and reverse. Helps establish context for what we're looking at. Thanks.

I will take a stab at this from the standpoint of physics. And if someone can show me where I am wrong, good for them! I appreciate learning/knowing why my reasoning and theory are bunk!

When you look at the die you can note the MM is pretty well isolated from other design elements. Whereas the date is in an area of the die where there are a lot of voids.

It would SEEM to make sense to me that since the die's metal in the area of the close spaced "date voids" is more prone to stress weakening that area than the single, isolated "mint mark void."

The date voids' walls would be thinner and more prone to degradation than the mint mark void whose walls would be much thicker since that void is surrounded by a field.

Now since I also realize it is still debated on a molecular level as to how a planchet's metal actually fills voids on this small of a scale and with so much tonnage at such an incredible speed, the above may all be fantasy. It might be nargles.

if the mint mark were engraved more deeply into the die, it would stay sharper as the die wears, but I don't know why the mint mark would be engraved any differently than the other devices

Thank you all for your replies, greatly appreciated!

I always treat these as a brain storming session so any opinion does help.

This led me to "strain (or work) hardening" .

The mint mark does seem deeper, thus, maybe more pressure is applied in this small area, causing the metal in this area to become harder than other areas of the die due to strain hardening phenomenon.
