I bought a pig in a poke on Sunday (yard sale)...I picked up a butter bowl that was taped shut with "over 500 wheats and worn coins" taped on top. The seller said the worn coins were just junk coins but wouldn't let me open the bowl to look...the price was $10, thought what the heck and bought it, after all 2 cents per wheat is pretty good! I finally got to sit down and actually look through it, there were 576 wheats(no keys) 4 Indian Head cents, 3 worn Barber quarters, 4 silver rosies, 1 War Nickel, 12 V nickels, and 12 Buffalo nickels, and one silver quarter. It also had several foreign coins including a large Canadian cent from 1888 . I guess I made out ok! Being the type of person that I am, had the guy let me open the bowl there, I would have given him at least twice what he was asking, but since he wouldn't I don't feel I did any wrong...after all I could have just as easily ended up with a bowl full of modern Lincolns... opinions? At the time, I never even thought of opening the bowl right after I bought it. I just set it in my truck and went on my merry way.

I say you did good! I believe it was a fair deal. With the restrictions placed on the sale, I think you deserve the reward. Besides, it is quite possible that he knew what he was selling and wanted to make someone's day; but only someone willing to take a chance.

I collect butter bowls! Fair and square ... especially at a yard sale.

Nice! You might check the date on the Canadian 1888 cent. There's one with doubling in the 8s.

You have nothing to feel guilty about. People price their items at flea markets and garage sales. You either pay their price or negotiate a lower price. You are not obligated to pay more than their asking price. Good Buy!!

It's nice to win one now and then. You paid the man what he asked so he was happy, you got some treasures, so everyone's happy.

Thanks everyone for your replies...while I didn't feel any guilt about the deal I decided I would gauge my "morals" against some others (am I a despicable jerk, the average guy, or a saint!) I guess I'm just fine. Anyway here are a few of the coins... Too bad the Indian cent is cut like that...I scanned the Barber quarter and the Canadian large cent together for size comparison.

That was a good Hunt. I love finding stuff like that at yard and estate sales. Another aspect of coin collecting I like. THE HUNT. "No State Hunting License Required Just Knowledge Of You Quarry"

Nice purchase. I don't you need to doubt your morals. You are the one who took a risk buying the coins without knowing what you would be getting.

Quote: while I didn't feel any guilt about the deal I decided I would gauge my "morals" against some others The price was not determined by you and you essentially purchased "sight-unseen" so bully for you on a good deal
