I could use some assistance Identifying the error on this coin. Is it a die gouge? Is it from the feeder finger? I have found this mark on many coins (dimes, nickels, quarters) with sometimes four of five gouges in alignment. Please can someone let me know what this is? Thanks

I refer to it as a bag mark. Or a hit from a coin that has a reeded edge. Thanks, Doug.

Thanks, Halo1st for your insight. What is a mystery is that the marks are the same on all the coins which I've found it. It does not vary in size or appearance from one coin to the next but is consistant in size, shape (half-moon) and spacing, something also interesting is that I find the marks on the obverse not the reverse. If the marks were due to reed strikes, I would think they would not have such a constant appearance.

Indeed, it is that "constant appearance" that identifies them as Reed Marks.

Maybe that is why most call heads more than tails. But kidding aside. The bag does not favor one side over the other.

Yes, post-strike damage of the reeding hit nature. I've seen this several hundred of times over many decades of coin hunting.
