Just picked this up recently out of an album at a show. It's perhaps the most beautiful rainbow toned clad dime I have seen. The pictures just don't do the coin justice. Anyway, my question. The copper band on the edge is not copper color, it's black all the way around. What would cause this? I am assuming it would be environment the coin was stored in or around which would be attributable to the toning. What are your thoughts? I did not get a picture of the edge but like I said, it's black. That last picture is awful, sorry. Thanks.

That would be classic album toning. Since the edge of the coin is the only part that makes contact with the album, that is the most extensively toned. Quite nice iridescence

That dime has some nice color to it and I would say it is very natural album toned. I am looking to buy an album with bu toned Roosevelt dimes. Anybody has one available? In the meantime here is one of my dimes for show.

I bet you got a great price on that gem too, nicer on my second look. I know what you mean about trying to capture the rainbow toning...IT IS IMPOSSIBLE. I have many coins like this (but Lincolns) that are unreal in hand, but just look so so on camera.

Oh...another vote for classic album toning. The black rim edge is a dead give away. Personally, I'd try to remove that black and then airtite the coin so the toning stays for good.

Thad, how would you go about that? A meticulous process?

steve, I'd just go over the edge with a qtip soaked in xylene, IPA and/or acetone.

Thanks, Thad. Would xylene remove the toning from a silver coin? (Not saying I would do that)

Why would you try to damage a coin like that?

NO NO NO....on the edge of the RIM only! NOT ON THE SURFACES! Removing that will conserve the coin and help ensure the toning will stop where it is.

In case you were responding to me, I didn't say that I would.
