So, just found this one in a big lot of coins I bought today. Soooo many strikes. Note that there are at least three raised dates near where the date should be, and at least a couple of reversed incuse dates in front of the nose.

I will leave it up to the general discussion to guess why this was made, but with multiple raised strikes it suggests a soft die was involved so not Johnny in the garage but a real counterfeiter.

It is not the standard vise job, that's what makes it interesting.

Hmmm, interesting. Is it possible the coin was originally multistruck and then Johnny or Jimmy tried recreating the error with a vice and different year coin?

I agree--at least three raised LIBERTYs as well.

Couldn't you pound one coin into another coin, and then use that coin as your "die" to pound into another coin? i.e. it doesn't have to be all that complicated. Just a thought, I'm not experienced in coin abuse.

faint raised Libertys could be from a previous vise job that had created an incuse Liberty

Thanks for the great comments! I've never really known how soft dies were made, but yeah, lots of pounding coins back and forth going on here.
