not sure where to post this, but is there any way to verify if an 8 reales silver coin came from the Atocha wreck without a COA? or if its real?

Sea finds usually carry a higher premium. I would not trust one without official documentation and even then paperwork can be faked. NGC has some Atocha coins slabbed, I would trust those more. You could contact Mel Fisher's treasures web site, ask them if they have a database of all that was found with pics? But they may not have photographed ALL they found, only the best ones I assume. They also have some for sale but in bezels. You could ask if they have any raw for sale.

My uncle invested $1,000 in Mel's company a few months before the Atocha was found. He got a descent return.

This topic comes up rather frequently. IIRC, Mel Fisher's outfit did not digitize and store photographs of all of the coins - if any. I've seen some COAs with clipped-out polaroids of the coin.
Here's a recent thread:

And this one, where the owner inherited the coin from his brother who dove with Mel. The people at the museum would not / could not authenticate it.

Also, keep in mind that there were many shipwrecks where the cargo was Spanish colonial coinage. Without a COA, it will be virtually impossible to positively attribute this coin to the Atocha.

The cutoff for posting in the world coin subforum vs. the ancients and medievals coin subforum is 1600 AD, so this is a bit on the cusp. However, since the Atocha wrecked in 1622, I think here is probably best.

Be wary of anyone trying to sell you a coin from any shipwreck without a legitimate COA. As mentioned, Atocha and some others carry a "perceived" premium so you can see the incentive to claim its from a particular shipwreck. Also, silver replicas for jewelry were made so just testing for silver is not sufficient to authenticate that the cob may be genuine.
