@sbg, the rims are extra wide because they have been worn down into the tops of the letters. This is pretty normal.

Try a small container of white vinegar and a little salt, mix well. Drop the nickel in and the next morning you'll have a date and maybe a mint mark . If you let the concoction dry in the small bowl you might get some really cool crystals too.

*** This will destroy all numismatic value but there's not much there anyway. Have fun !

Worth about 15 cents untreated as a no date. Worth about 10 cents as a cull after being treated.

No big loss either way.

Date could be recovered, but IMO a bit futile for reasons others have mentioned. No MM, so they eliminates any key dates, and the 1916 DDO has doubling visible on other devices that are distinguishable even in dateless grades ( no visible doubling here). Based on a quick glance at the ribbon, it looks to be 1923 or later. Ribbon design changed several times, various thicknesses and curvature. I personally can't stand treated buffa, so I vote keep it as is
