So I've never paid so much for a coin and I'm out here out that I've paid too much for the grade. I'm dying to know what it would grade and thanks to 1913-S their weak strike makes it nearly impossible for me to even have an opinion on the grade. I need help. SOS
Should I do something about the dark spots? Acetone or just leave it alone. Is it worth send it out for grading?

Hmm, does anybody think it was plated or painted? That spot on the rim next to the feather at 9:30 looks like something is chipping off, and the whole coin has an odd look. Maybe it's the pictures.

The 1913-S T1 is better struck than the T2. T1's usually have an ok strike, this one looks average for the date, with strike weakness in the hair above the knot, and the buffalos head.

Surfaces do not look original to me. I'm at AU Details, cleaned and ED. Dark spots will have already affected the surfaces under then. Acetone won't do anything IMO. You can try xylene but will likely have better luck with Verdicare.

Ok...I try not to ask...but since you mention...how much did you pay for the grade?
I'm not sure about the ED...but an acetone bath surely wouldn't hurt?
Maybe a couple of "lite" swipes with a toothpick over the dark spots "after" a bath may dispurse or lighten them up?
Good looking coin...mine is not as nice!

$63. I thought the dark spots would go away with an acetone wash but if they're there to stay then it's terrible purchase.

APMEX is selling XF for $145. They're valuing many of their coins as if we're at a 100% annual inflation.

please wait at least 24hrs to post grade. 48 is better so folks can have time to chime in.

a little too much glare but the surfaces do not look natural.

You are always so worried about people posting grades and quick to comment about it. Too quick in this case because the OP has a raw coin, and Slider posted another slabbed example for comparison.

To the OP, I do not think the coin is original, almost certainly cleaned.

I'd call it like Ty did.

I have seen a few with a very strong die crack that develops from the cheekbone left of the nose that eventually extends all the way to the rim adjacent, and a very strong clash with letter transfer below the chin is present; some others I have seen have a die crack between K11-K12 that goes from the top of the hair up to the rim, or a heavy clash left of EPU.

On still other coins, both those areas of the coin have apparently been heavily reworked with die polishing, removing most of the clash marks but obliterating a lot of the obverse detail right of the bust, or polishing out the clash left of EPU which causes the area at STATES OF to get super mushy and merge into the reverse rim above.

I don't know how many die pairs were used to strike these, but there are a lot of interesting variations from coin to coin. I'm sure there are quite a few other things to find if you look for awhile!

Definitely ED, probably cleaned, can't disagree with any of that.
