Ouch! Yes, the infamous ring of mechanical wrapper damage. Cool.

For sure that is mechanical damage, but I don't think that the coin rolling machines are putting this high of a load to deform the letters this much. If so, wouldn't they be tearing the paper?

could be a Gumball Machine - but the marks are far too recent and shiny to have been done long ago. I haven't even seen a penny Gumball Machine around my town lately, but seeing how I'm far too old to look for those machines, who knows. Looking closely at the marks, they all show metal getting moved from the rings deep gouge towards the center of the coin all the way around it - which would also preclude Rolling Machine Damage too, as the claws would have an outwards movement when crimping the paper roll.

Years ago I found a Wheat cent end coin in a commercially-wrapped (Loomis) cent roll. The coin was freshly damaged by the wrapping machine in just this manner.
