Hey Folks - It has been sometime since I have been posting, since I have been trying to make use of the weather before I had my 2nd rotator cuff surgery. Yah.
Have a question about this 1961 LMC. The L in LIBERTY seems to have been sliced vertically. At first, I thought it was PMD, but for some reason I feel this was from the mint. Could this be the case? Thanks for any and all assistance.

It is mechanical damage from after this coin left the mint, perhaps from a Gumball Machine mechanism. Also, hope your wing is feeling good!

Hey Spence. It is flapping a little, but not flying yet. Thanks!
I can see what you are thinking. It had me a little.

PMD.

Some help...knowing the minting and the die making process goes a loooong way to determining PMD vs. an actual mint error.

Coins spend so little time at the mint with a limited amount of machinery/actions that can make them into an error. But they spend sometimes past a century in circulation where daily they are subjected to potentially damaging treatment.

Here is a GREAT article on die making. After this you should be able to tell if a mark on a coin, or anomaly, is from a die error.

You can find videos online about the minting process. The more you know about it, the better you get at knowing actual errors.
