Not to throw a monkey wrench into this, but it is either a filled die or an abraded die situation. And...the magnified image does show signs of the FS, the remnants of the F is just to the right of where that scratch ends, and a look to the right shows the slightest remnants of the S.

This filled die or die abrasion scenario can occur on any nickel, not just the 1990 D.

It is not a situation, to my knowledge where a hub or die was actually missing the initials.

Thanks,
Bill

The initials are part of the design. It they are missing, they weren't on the first coins struck. Thus it is not a variety, just a die that is impaired with grease/over polishing.

Well than is this still considered a part of the "error" Like the 22D penny, it had certain degrees of the missing D?

The 1922 no D is not an error. They only minted 1922-D Cents that year. The dies were punched with the punch. Because of over use/over polishing the dies most the devices were worn down on the dies including the mint mark. Because the mint mark is a separate process, some assumed it was left off. But they were there when they started striking the Cents. So they are not a variety. More of a very worn die that has got a lot of attention like the 3 legged 1937-D Buffalo nickel.

Thanks for that info coop,
So do I have a collectible coin, or just a deceiving one?
Just when I thought CRHing was starting to pay me back.........please say yes, coop, please...

Oh and what I meant with the 22D mintmark, correct me if I'm wrong but isn't it more valuable the less the MM is visible? Would the 90D initials be an instance of this?

Cole317,

It is definitely collectible.

I've been through 8100 rolls of nickels the past year and checked every single 1990d. Never found a one. Congratulations, a very scarce find indeed!

YYYYEEEEESSSSSSSSSS THAT'S WHAT I WANTED TO HEAR!!
Before I had an account on this site, I checked a few times a day to keep up with your progress, and I bet it was a pretty amazing journey for you! If it makes you feel any better, It took me 8 boxes to find one buffalo, and in 9 boxes I've found 3 silvers in 9.
-Thanks from saving me a trip into depression coppernickeldaddy!

Cole: Sounds like there is a market, just like the other two coins I mentioned. But your first coin you posted is the most interesting with the WAY-MAD Cent!

Cool Find, now I'm going to be looking for one.
What the heck is a speared Bison?

Peace
ST~

It could be a die gouge that caused a rather fairly noticeable line that appears to go through the back of the 2005 D Jefferson nickel reverse on the Bison. It goes from the E in STATES to under the belly of the bison.
Graded ones in MS 65 get 150.00 give or take.
I think these were mainly found in a certain release from the mint rolls that come with the US MINT wrappers.
My personal feelings on these is whoop dee doo. No-FS-Initials-1990-D-Nickel---Is-This-What-I-Think-It-Is?
When it comes to the prices they fetch. I'll pass on this and the so called detached legs. If I cherry pick one though, then I'll change my tune probably. No-FS-Initials-1990-D-Nickel---Is-This-What-I-Think-It-Is?

After reading this good article I have edited my previous post to say it could be a die gouge. I thought it was, but I could be wrong. But it is a defect in the die of some kind.

Cole,

Yes, it was quite a journey, one that isn't through yet! The thread is called 25000 Rolls of Nickels, and I am about ready to start it up again. Go until I complete another set, then take a break again probably! My girlfriend loves going through the nickel rolls with me, and she has been asking me about it a lot recently. About time to bring that thread back to life again!
