There are quite a few "how are (objects) made" on YouTube. I can't imagine these to be too difficult considering that these were made probably at least 50 years ago. Would like to know the processes.

I see them constructed out of thick paperboard. I would imagine they would have had some metal dies used to punch holes out. Newer technology might be able to just laser cut this. This paperboard is then glued together with some faux leather like material with holes already precut. Clear inserts are added in. The holder would have had additional material to support the screw joint and cap and fancy embossing. What other processes are involved?

What companies would be happy to entertain custom made albums?

That said, what and when is the first known album made?

That is an interesting discussion point @gsx, especially considering virtually everyone on CCF used to have or still has these coin boards or folders.

I tracked down a short article by David Lang here that provides a little information as well as a teaser for his series of books on this subject "Coin Collecting Albums: A Complete History & Catalog."

We need to be careful to differentiate albums from folders.

The OP is inquiring about the former, while the linked article is focused on the latter.

Now with that being said, the CoinWeek article is very interesting and has some great photos!

Hmm I hear you @jbuck and I blur that line all the time. Seems like David Lang does the same based on the title of his book though. Maybe there isn't great consensus about nomenclature?

A recent post that seemed to indicate it was more important here in the USA than abroad.

Perhaps it is most important when a vendor sells both types. There are certainly no shortage of topics on CCF discussing the difference. More than I can list, easier to just do a search.
