I picked up this (unlisted) Cud and though the photos weren't great, I was able to see what looked like signs of a DDO. Sure enough it is a match for DDO-004 and it is the missing link on Variety Vista between Stage B and Stage C where the reverse die was changed out. Now we know why they changed the die. The 1940S has its own page on CudsonCoins for the pre-cuds/retained Cuds with 100 of them! Obviously a problem year at SF mint. With all those PC's you would think there would be a lot of Cuds listed but there are only 12, or 13 now hopefully. So they were able to limit the amount of actual " Cuds" that left the mint but didn't mind the PC's getting out? Funny enough, by Stage D there is another Cud forming in nearly the same spot (left wheat ear) so I guess there is potentially two different Cuds on DDO-004 on different reverse dies in the same general area? weird. The carbon spots are unfortunate but this cent is still a winner in my (coin) book. Coppercoins shows an earlier stage of this Cud and variety vista shows a slightly more progressed Retained Cud. http://www.varietyvista.com/01a%20L...0SDDO004.htmhttps://coppercoins.com/lincoln/die...ie_state=mds

Thanks for the comments CCF!! Quote:Excellent addition to the Cud saga that is 1940-S. Great find! Thanks TB, I can see you've put in your share of work on this saga too! I should add that of all the pre-cuds listed on CoC, there aren't any that match the early stages of this reverse Cud. 21R is close but there isn't a crack on the right ear and it doesn't look like a DDO. I have submitted to JC so we'll see what he comes up with.

Wow, I love this! So cool that 83 years after the coin was minted, we can connect the dots between the different die states to see why the reverse die was replaced. Hope you'll send it out to be documented.
