Well I can't give you a grade, but I'm a big fan of early copper. This one has some honest wear and tear. I'm loving that it is a spike head by the way.

i would have been inclined to leave this in a 30 slab. I dont think it would grade 30 again. of course the slab grade doesn't matter if you buy the coin and not the slab but a lot of buyers just look at that

ANACS grades simply seem to run higher than warranted in many cases to me. Perhaps you're right - darned hard to get the slab off of it! I did some research and saw a PCGS F15 that sold for $115 w/o any die variety noted. At $45 invested I feel I'm OK if I decide to sell it at some point. Probably keep it though; for some strange reason this one just appealed to me, but I didn't think $45 would buy it.

Some of it is rim bumps, a lot of it is crumbling caused by extensive Die Deterioration 15 details

I've got to differ with you, paralyse, on the grade just a bit. Here's an ANACS F15 graded 1817. I think the hair detail on mine brings it up to at least an F20.

Just got John Wright's book. This appears to me to be an N1/R3+.

No offense taken. The ANACS coin looks reasonably correct at 15, so yes, yours could do 20.

Should have left it in the ANACS cache, but just wanted to hold it in my hand. Abraham Lincoln was so young he couldn't even heft the ax to split those rails when the press struck this. Thomas Jefferson and John Adams were walking around. I can't get away from the attachment to history - War of 1812 just finished. I think that's part of what makes the hobby enjoyable. The historical context makes the coins more interesting to me. For $45 I'm getting off cheap!

I think it is a flat and less appealing strike than the example. The rim bumps detail it IMO. However; it does still have some pretty good eye appeal.

Does it make any difference that it's an N1/R3+ in terms of value? This is a keeper for me regardless - just like the coin for some reason.
