Going through some Morgan and Peace dollars I aquired the other day and noticed this on the reverse above the eagle's shoulder. Sucks that it is a holed coin. Just curious as to what this may be. I am just starting to study Morgan and Peace dollars now. Didn't realize there was so much to learn about these.

With hole the coin is not worth more than melt value IMO. It's a die clash, the back of Liberty's neck from the obverse. Die clashes can be found on a lot of coin denominations and you can read about them online. Below is an overlay of the obverse/reverse. Vamworld lists Peace dollar clashes as a variety, depending how long the clash is. It's not rare on the 1922 Peace dollars, I'd say a little scarce but does not had much value to the coin usually. Some like to collect die clashes, some do not.

Here is one of my Morgan dollar clashed coins and an overlay. If you go to Vamworld.com there's lots of info and pics there to learn about varieties.

CaptJeffWorthFL,

Welcome to the PEACE and MORGAN VAMS.

Before you go further I Highly suggest You build one more book into Your Library, Soft covered History, Research, Findings, and Pictorials of Known VAMS.... The Fathers of VAMS..... Started back in the 1960's.....

The Book is called The Comprehensive Catalog and Encyclopedia of Morgan & Peace dollars.. By Leroy C. Van Allen and George Mallis Fourth Edition is My Last Book on the Topic. These men are Legends in the Numismatic World......

It is a Wonderful Insight into the World of VAMS . ( VAMWORLD )

The VAM you show has a Very Unique History to me, I Sought out EVERY single Die Stage I could, of the Clashes Results. I was seeking the " Highly Sought After Transferred Letter " E " Clashed on the Reverses of This Clash.

The Die Stages are Very Minute or Extremely Strong to See...

The Pictured VAM Posted by Livingwater is Another VAM, Highly sought after, I Too have a Passion for All The Clashes, Transferred Letters and Over all Coins that Should NOT of been released from the mint from Cuds, Scar Face 1883-O Morgan, That's a Very Sweet, Dated History of A Disintegrating Die in All it's stages ...... Fascinating Topic, I wish You Well

I come across Morgan and Peace dollars here and there. I get them from Garage sales, clients of mine sometimes when I catch up with them and mention coins and just stupid luck. I don't buy them from coin shops or ebay as they almost have been picked through for key dates, errors and varieties unless they are graded and slabbed with the designation. So I have not put a lot of time studying them. I am very familiar with standing liberty and Washington quarters, Barber and Roosevelt dimes, V, Buffalo and Jefferson nickels and Cents from the Indian Head to the Shield Cent.

Morgan and Peace dollars is a whole new chapter and rabbit hole I am about to embark on so I know exactly what I am looking at if and when I do come across any anywhere.

That 1922 with the hole just had to be the one with a die clash.

Thanks for the links and info as well!
