I'm pretty sure it is what I titled it, but before throwing it out, I thought I would check with you guys first. it's obvious had a hard life and has been like this a long time. The toning on the edges match the surface pretty well. Weight is 2.666 grams

Yes I agree with you: damage plus heavy circulation wear seems to be the reason for the light weight.

LOL The "I" in IN and the "1" in the date were the only survivors, it appears.
thanks guys. That confirms my thoughts. I've been separating all my wheats by dates trying to get a little more organized, and forgot this was in there from about 9 years.

could be a grinder coin, or maybe a "parking lot coin" and got ran over many times. (or both)

I say grinder coin because it's quite a bit smaller than a normal cent. I think it was ground down around the edges. But yes as far as the obverse and reverse, definitely a parking lot coin.

Same diameter as a dime. But that wouldn't make sense, since dimes were 90% silver. Couldn't be struck on a dime planchet, if that's what your thoughts were?

Ya it's ground down to mimic the size of a dime. We use to do this back in the 50s and 60s. The coke machines back then weren't to sophisticated.

Maybe 1¢ or more for a long distance phone call, or 4¢ for a pack of cigarettes might make more cents. Thanks, Doug.

I think it was an attempt to mimic a dime and a parking lot coin. PMD.
