I asked this question on Cu also and the response was mostly "not practical" "never happen", will add to submission fees"..What do you folks think ?
In other words if you submit a coin to one of the TPG and you get back a different grade than you thought it would come back. should you get a small note or some info like " this coin graded ms64 because ......". just a short thing to help customers understand better.

Or do we just take the blind faith of the coin grading gods and accept whatever answer is given without any explaination.

any thoughts ?

I have posed the same question for several years in forums and gotten the same response.

It is not only practical it already existed on the last hurrah grading certificates from ANACS when the ANA owned it. On the reverse of those certificates was a box that said "Subjective Factors" and a list: Luster
Surface
Eye
Appeal
Strike
They assigned the number 1 for below average, 2 average and 3 above average to each area. There is no reason why this can't be put on slabs as abbrevations: L Sf E/A Stk in small letters at the bottom of slabs. I do not and never will understand why that's so "impractical" which, whenever I asked the question seemed to be the standard issue blurb thrown out with no specific reason as to why. What's more, I don't see how that's even our problem. The fact is this information must exist if they arrived at a grade and if we paid them to arrive at that grade we are entitled to receive the information. How they get it to us is their problem.

I would even say that instead of average, below average and above average they should put for those areas the exact number of grading points given to each factor so collectors can see exactly how much they are paying for a certain factor and is it really there is it really that WOW! and do they really want to pay that much for that factor. What are they afraid of?

Gil, in a word, "Yes". Far too often, I've received back coins which were not only undergraded, but badly undergraded with no word of explanation. Worse, I've received back coins in bodybags as "damaged" or "cleaned" with no evidence of either. On occasion, I've had a tiny post-it attached from PCGS on a coin bodybagged for "damage" with a hand-written "tooled on Liberty's ear" or "rim damage at obverse 3 o'clock" which I appreciate, but this doesn't happen often.

I'm not sure I agree with the argument that it would increase the grading cost, especially at the Regular or Express Service levels. It wouldn't take too many seconds to fill out a pre-printed checklist of determining factors which prevented the MS-63 from being an MS-64 or MS=65.

I don't take ANYTHING on blind faith.

Yeah, a big affirmative on that one. A couple of posts to Mr. Taylor brought up this issue, from SuperDave(https://goccf.com/t/3286) and myself (https://goccf.com/t/3314). Check out his responses- sounds like something might be possible.

I'd wager that as a community we could come up with a pretty thorough form that could be sent to (a) TPG(s) for consideration.
