This weekend I decided to upgrade some of my storage components. Found stuff I forgot about like a 1957P/D mint set. I remember moving the coins out of the nasty mint cardboard because they were already toning. Moved them into these cheap holders and added a few layers of ziplocks and desiccant but no sacrificial coin (DOH!).

Here we are a many years later and the coins continued to tone despite my efforts. However, I did get a really nice toned cent (in my favorite green) and dime out of the deal. Nothing like cherrypicking your own collection.

Mr. Washington is getting rather dark, small patch of terminal corrosion developing. Breakout the VERDI-CARE for that black patch and time to button up the storage a couple notches!

Interesting toners, thanks for haring the photos.

Since these are from a mint set they must be MS state, but certainly appear to be weakly struck.

If you Verdi-Care the quarter could you show us the result? I wouldn't have thought it would help that kind of terminal toning.

I spot treated only the black areas only, it definitely improved but didn't fully remove. Sorry no pictures, I've already put it all away and it's highly sealed-up.

thanks for sharing these toners. curious though what is the climate like in your area?

Typical Midwest, hot in summer, freezing in winter. These are kept in my basement which has a pretty tight temp range....and of course, multiple layers. And now, even more protection after I saw them continuing to tone.

Very interesting. I have this "mint set" from 50+ years ago still in the original case and it's hardly changed a bit. I guess whatever was in that cardboard for yours stuck around.

A few decades in that mint cardboard eats at all of these sets.

Interesting discovery. Though, as I began reading I was expecting the worst! Thank you for sharing with us.
