I have a foreign gold coin (Proof, in original case and box with the original insert). There are only 684 of these out there as an error was detected and the mint recalled the rest. A corrected coin was issued (~5000) in the same style case with a different box.
So here is the question. Is it better to leave everything in the original case and box or have it graded and placed in the grading company's holder?

Come time to sell if that's your future intention, I would have PCGS or NGC grade and slab that coin for the best return on your coin. It would be hard to determine the error so if you could post a picture of the coin, that would be great and .

In this specific case, I would disagree with you, Dave. A known error so significant as to force a recall would probably retain more resale value in its' original packaging as long as this packaging is of enough quality to cover long-term storage. None of the major TPG's are as competent with foreign coins as they would like you to think, and this fact is known by potential buyers. The greatest value of this coin lies not in its' grade but in its' existence, anyways. Welcome to Coin Community, oppyusa. We're not afraid to disagree here. You may trust vermontensium's opinions without reservation. We happen to disagree on this one, but he speaks from great experience. Others may disagree with me, as well.

Just to clarify -was the "error" on the coin itself? Or only on the packaging?
If the error was on the coin, then it won't matter whether you take it out of the box or not - anyone that looks at the coin will still see the error. But if the error was only on the packaging, then it's the packaging itself that's the source of any "error premium", if it has any, and the coin should remain inside it.

The error is on the coin. I am a bad photographer. Here is a link to some good pictures that someone else took. http://isracoins.com/P49.htmI have confirmed that the three coins I have have the error (I got them from the link above). I am just trying to figure out what would a collector do? I am not selling them, just want to learn. Thanks for your thoughts.

I'm humbled Super After seeing the coin and yes, I agree with SuperDave the TPG's are not as astute in foreign coins as the overwhelming majority of coins they grade and encapsulate are U.S., I vote to keep it in it's original box as well

Great! That just saved a couple Shekels. I have some other pieces (some gold, some silver (Morgan, Peace,)that are okay but not worthy of grading. I was thinking of grading the whole bunch (about 15 other coins) if these error coins were worth sending No need to send them now.
Thanks for the help.

Ooooh. There is a strong collecting community for Israeli issues. You're in a good position with this coin, going forward. I'm leaning towards Sap's opinion here - the packaging seems no different either way - but your target audience for potential resale probably doesn't care about slabbing/grading. Keep it original. And let's talk about your silver dollars. There are many grade-independent value-added varieties among them, and it's a subject near and dear to my heart.
