Hi to all, Haven't been on in a while....Got this Wesrward journey Ocean view satin finish set years ago, along with the bison set " posted in another post" and noticed they looked improperly annealed or copper wash? ...They are still sealed in case..."The nickel on the right has it surface missing almost entirely front & back"...Just got around to pulling them out to show on this great site, Thanks for any opinions in advance....Terry.

@ter, I understand that you might not have taken these coins out of their packaging, but isn't that a fingerprint visible in your first picture? I'm wondering if the coloring isn't just toning--interested to see where we net out on this one and your other pair of nickels.

In my opinion, I just think it's toning.

There is a fingerprint on one and scratch marks. This is also not the OGP, that means that these coins were touched (and based on the fingerprint the hands were sweaty). The reverse is mostly a sneeze or environmental damage. With the fingerprint you basically have a 5 cent coin (no longer matters that it's a matte coin)

Did this set come from the US Mint or a 2nd party?

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I do not believe that silver was involved in producing the satin finish on these coins.

Nickels are not clad coins. So there will be no copper underneath a nickel layer.
they are made of: Content:75% Copper 25% Nickel all mixed up together.

And this nickel was not packaged by the mint - it is an after market item. and not handled very well seeing that fingerprint on the obverse.

Yes, looks to be packaging by a third party--not US Mint. With all that, this is one of my more favorite nickels--Ocean In View.
