Did you look for a match on the reference site? Just a FYI: it would be known as an RPM if it is one.

Wexlers, "Brians" has good information. OMM, would be like a D over S (different mint marks over one another).

That is the 1942 D over Horizontal D.

You should hang onto that coin regardless. Only 13M cupronickel 1942-D 5c coins were struck before the Denver Mint switched over to the War Nickel alloy.

The CONECA site lists a fourth RPM with an edge peeking out under the D. Definitely need a sharper picture to make a determination here.

@Brand - are you saying that the OP's coin is the RPM? If so, I'm not that sure, not without much better images.

with both of you as Dearborn says, can't really tell without better photos, but as Brandmeister says if it is RPM, it's most likely the D over horizontal D RPM, not the D over D, or D over S RPM.

For sure definitely need much clearer photos of the mint mark. If it's full of dark gunk, then a soak in acetone and some very light agitation using a Q-Tip on it may help loosen the gunk up enough to show it better. Since it's already a circulated and worn coin it won't hurt value unless you are too aggressive and make it appear cleaned.

I am seeing a circulation hit on the mint mark. Better images would help.

I was not saying it was the RPM. I was just listing the references for checking it, since Hip is new to CCF.

Maybe there's some possibility that the mint mark is one of the two subtle D/D south RPM, but it doesn't seem like the big dog D-over-horizontal-D from those first pictures.

Agree, just a circulation hit on the OP's coin.

This is one of those instances where a close, in-hand examination would do wonders. Looks interesting to me.
