Rob, I feel this is all deterioration. When I started searching nickels from time to time, I found out that this was what this was and is pretty common. Maybe something else mixed in there but I don't think so.
The T looks very compelling, quite similar to Kennedy half doubling on IGWT. But I've looked at several thousand nickels this year, and I think -makecents- probably has it right. Nickels in the 1980s and 1990s often have severe and sometimes cool-looking Die Deterioration. But it is not an era known for doubled dies.
Or it could be a new attribution. I think Brian Ribar will look at nickels for five bucks, and he's a recognized expert on nickel doubled die coins.
Could it be both? Since I've been checking out nickels lately, I've noticed they sure tried to get every (cent) worth out of those die's, especially the 80's.
Coop told me that a coin can have MD along with RPM.
I assume you are using some method of magnification? I use an LED light from the top edge of the coin. One of the tricks I have learned to spot DDD and MD versus a real double is to turn the coin 90 degrees and 180 degrees relative to the light source. That really changes the way the shadows fall and what metal features are highlighted.
