Flat shelf like and makes the letters smaller, Machine Doubling. You will find the bigger the coin, the more MD.

This is Machine Doubling. Whenever you suspect you have a doubled die, RPM, or OMM go to varietyvista.com and find a match. Note: If you do not find an EXACT match to your coin listed using this easy method, then you most likely have a damaged coin or other issues like (non collectable) Machine Doubling, Die Deterioration Doubling, etc. (look these up at error-ref.com) If after checking there you think you have a match, then feel free to post the link and we can verify for you or help you understand why not

The clipped tips of the T's and E says Machine Doubling to me. However, the A's and R's have the structure preserved right down to the serifs, and that's a little odd. This looks like an uncirculated coin in mint cellophane. Is it a proof or a business strike? I assume business, but I don't know what a proof looks like under plastic. All the VV listings for 1961 are proofs. Always check Wexler as well. Regardless, you should have an image of the whole coin face. It seems that Franklin halves usually show the strongest doubling on EPU, so you might want to take a look there as well.

Yeah, with the above, Machine Doubling, not the real DDR. The real DDR would also be well doubled on the EPU reverse motto.

Well, you take excellent pictures! Unfortunately, this discussion has far exceeded my knowledge on Franklin halves. I put this coin side-by-side with a 1961 proof Wexler WDDR, and I'm not sure how the pros conclude that a feature is MD vs. die doubling on this series. The doubling on the true WDDR is shallower than the lettering, to the point that some of it got polished away on the L during die polishing. So obviously flat and shelf-like doesn't immediately indicate Machine Doubling on these coins. Likewise, that chubby bar on your N sure looks like a traditional doubled die to me. I can certainly accept the word of the more experienced folks here. But it would help to hear the breakdown of concluding MD vs. DDR on a Franklin half.
