@1cent, first welcome to CCF. Second, while the composition of all of these cents is the same, their pathway to your coin cabinet has varied. Any sort of chemical or environmental exposure can tone copper in different colors and your collection represents the various exposures by different color tones.

Because copper, being an element, is a chemical that reacts with things it comes into into contact with in the environment. Just like silver tarnishes over time, copper can be influenced to be different colors. Sometimes colors come from people deliberately playing with pennies such as when they use a pencil eraser on them. Extreme heat can also change the color. You don't have to look too far online for videos showing how to change them silver colored and gold colored.

Agree with Earle42. Copper is a rather reactive metal.

p on the Gold coast if these one cent coins were exposed to the environment - the Salt air alone could change the colouring. As could chemicals in the air and in your home.
Other members have posted good explanations above. any Way welcome Mate

First wellcome here.
Second. You has till 1982 mid year two kind of penny. 1909 till August 1962 was bronze: 95 Cu and 5 Tin and Zinc. After August 1962 till mid 1982 you have brass 95 Cooper and 5 Zinc. After you has zinc core cooper coated. So two kind of of alloys which can take different colors.
The first period was caracterisate by big variety in the % of the Tin. more tin, more offend has tendency to be darker. More Zinc, more to be yellow. Different atmosferic compositions will affect also. The secon period it is characterized by more red-rose color but also the environement affct. Third period is more Dark Rose but manipulation and environement move the Zinc at the surface. The plating Cu it is porous and the zinc will develop destructive or selfdefence oxides.
A common characteristic of all periodes it is if the coin was clean. In this case the coin will show gold yellow color or become very light rose.
You has some interesting years on your mini collection.
Hope to be at your satisfaction. Silvio
