Hey there! Came across this penny and I've never seen anything like it before. To me it seems like someone used a personalized stamp or something on it. It's definitely imprinted or dented (not sure what the proper term for it is) on the reverse and raised up on the obverse. I took one pic to hopefully show that. Just wanted to ask the community of your impressions, please? I can take more pics if needed. Any and all observations are welcome! Thank you!

That is a unique one - post it in the counterstamps topic. Someone will chime in if they know some history.

, glad you can ask us!

What you have there is called a counter stamp added by others post-mint, so would be called damage by us on this forum. Caveat: others collect counterstamped coins as highly collectable since they can gain us a glimpse into other groups or organizations linked to these counterstamps.

There is another member on here named chafemaster (sp?) that likes his counterstamped coins and might like your coin here. The obverse design is of a crown with a cross in it so has a religious theme to it.

Thank you for the quick info! I've already reposted in the correct forum so hopefully we'll learn something soon! I'm gonna try to get some better pics because in looking at what I posted, I believe there may be some doubling on the obverse. In particular I was looking at the "In God We Trust" and there seems to be a pretty noticable extra W to the left of the actual W. Is anybody else seeing it? I'll be back with more pics!

Interesting one! Fair amount of force would been required to create that counterstamp.

As it turns out, @chafe has posted one of these Masonic counterstamps previously. Here is the link:

Sometimes, counterstamps like these are produced as souvenirs (such as the ones with Kennedy's head). Sometimes, they are made for in-house rituals of various kinds (such as the Masonic pennies). Sometimes, they are simply done for advertising, with the intent of being put back out in circulation.

The latter kind are usually quite vague about exactly who and what they're advertising, because under US law, it is illegal to place advertisements on coins. 18 USC § 475. So if they're too specific about what they're advertising, the Feds can track them down and fine them. Marvel Studios were fined back in 2008 when they decided to slap Silver Surfer stickers onto a bunch of quarters and release them into circulation, to promote their upcoming movie.

The most interesting thing about this CS is it didn't destroy the plating and expose the zinc core (much). They must have used heat to get the plating to stretch that much without tearing.
