Good afternoon, I have several clumps of El Cazador coins I inherited when my cousin passed away. I have some coins with a numbered certificate dated 1993. I have a smaller coin and a bunch of clumps that I understand were brought up by someone else in 2002. I determined this as I have a different unnumbered certificate signed by someone else and I know for sure that there is a local artist in Key West making jewelry with these coins and he credit RC Kilburn (the man who signed the 2002 unnumbered certificate). The clumps were given to my cousin for cleaning some of the coins. I have the machine he cleaned them with also. I am looking for some information. Please see pictures.
Thanks
Amy

That's very cool. I wonder if there's a way to remove the coins that are stuck to each other?

I think this is electrolysis for cleaning the coins

I would not even remotely consider electrolysis, at least at this point. Buy some food grade mineral oil and submerge the clumps. At least that is how I would start to approach this. You could start off with 100% Acetone but I don't think it would have any impact.

What is the composition? Didn't read all the text so apologies if it is in there.

Gosh I would leave them as clumps. So cool. It seems like they'd be more valuable as-is.

I agree with leaving the clumps as is. It's pretty easy to find these already cleaned up and in fairly good condition. I own several and see them at just about every coin show I've gone to. I've never seen clumps of them in the same state that they were recovered in. Personally, I'd be more interested in buying a clump of 10 of these rather than 10 separate cleaned ones. I imagine I'm not the only one!

I agree, just leave the clumps as they are.

What more information do you need? Clumps are highly collectable. Look at Daniel Sedwick's auction results for clump values. Auction 33 Lot 354, an El Cazador clump of 32 8R's, sold for $5500. Smaller clumps sell for less. Contact him to discuss your cleaning machine.

LEAVE the clumps, do not clean any of the coins. A larger clump of coins would bring larger money. You just don't see them because they were all separated and cleaned to the moon.

That is a great looking hoard, I have not seen one like it in the recent years. Keep us updated with photos of anything else cool you find!

>>>I'd list those clumps on ebay ... the clumps (especially the one with the oyster shell...) are more valuable than the (sum of) individual coins themselves ... BTW ... Dan's very knowledgeable & helpful ...
