First time poster all, so take it easy on me if I mess anything up. I'm planning to send this one in for conservation and grading. Trying to figure out insurance, grading service, etc. Based on photograde I'd say mid-AU, but I know these are notorious for weak strikes. I've looked through several pics of Hot Lips' on CoinFacts and I think it holds it's own with higher AU, but I'd love to get opinions from anyone who's seen a fair amount of them. Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated! *** Moved by Staff moved to a more appropriate forum. ***Edited by UnimpossibIe 01/20/2024 6:13 pm

Thank you John1. I was hoping to have this in the VAM forum so I got people who've seen a lot of this variety, but I guess we'll see what the Grading forum has to offer!

to the Community! Can't argue with AU! If it were mine I'd just go with ANACS for authentication, variety verification, conservation and grading. Nice coin!

Thanks westernsky! I do the vast majority of my grading through ANACS, however I'm a little concerned about having it conserved there in case I want to cross it over to PCGS at some point down the road. That is if it hasn't been cleaned, I'm open to opinions on that as well. Thanks again!

Here's a different angle of the Obverse for anyone else who'd be so kind to weigh in.

mid-AU
have you tried acetoning it to possibly get some of the black gunk off before sending it out?

panzaldi and ericgreen I've never used acetone on a coin and don't really want to "learn" on this one. I was planning on doing conservation service through either ANACS or NGC. Does anyone have a preference over the two? Thanks again!

ANACS did a great job conserving my Canadian silver, but I've only done it once. With ANACS you'd be better off doing multiple coins as they charge $59 flat rate for up to 20. NGC charges 4% of coin's value, minimum $25, but I don't know how to value this variety.

Thanks for the opinion kbbpll! If the consensus here is correct, it's an AU55, which NGC values at $1300. 4% of that would be $52, plus $40 for grading, plus $10 for their submission fee, plus $25 for Membership, plus $28 for return shipping. That's $155 total, which feels like a lot, so if there's no major difference in the result I'll probably have ANACS conserve it. Thanks again for the advice!
