I am sorting through some rolls deciding what to bring to the u.s. this summer to trade or sell. I have a few tubes of lower grade 22/23 Peace dollars and I always buys quarters to trade for gold ....but I'm unsure on Morgans like this one.... It's clearly been cleaned ....and a very common date. Curious to hear some opinions from the forum... *** Moved by Staff moved to a more appropriate forum. ***

@roma, just to be clear, are you asking about a VAM or a grade for this Morgan? Thx for the clarification so that I can ensure that your thread is in the right spot. Thx.

Sorry Spence, I was probably asking more for a grade than a VAM; I have a number of obviously cleaned Morgans and I'm undecided on what to do with them.

I'll say high AU details (cleaned). Just a bullion coin to me.

Thanks everyone... So as a 'bullion coin' I should expect it to be worth melt?

Roma, "junk silver" Morgans sell above melt - in the range of $25 - $30 or so with the current silver price.

keep this in mind. if you're coming here to sell you probably are looking at a show or a LCS in order to unload them quickly. either way they are not going to pay retail for a coin and detail coins significantly less than their value and most places would just pay melt or a little over depending the severity of the details for silver
this one AU details. because of its higher grade and the cleaning was not harsh I agree you should be able to get $25-30. there looks like a small rim hit obv K12 also

Problem coin, don't know where you're selling and what prices you get, could be worth it to being.

Last summer I brought about 10-12lbs of pre 65 quarters, dimes, and halves back to the U.S. and traded for gold. There is a metals dealer near my family's house in the U.S. The transaction was extremely easy and he paid the highest of the dealers I called in the area. I have about 150+ Morgans and Peace; probably 100ish are ones I am happy to keep; original, not harshly cleaned, better dates, better overall (I've posted the range of coins I find on this forum); ideally, I'd like to sell/trade about 50 22/23 Peace dollars in various condition and some common date cleaned Morgans; when I cost average everything - all Morgans and Peace, I know my cost so I'd go from there; melt per coin vs. slight premium, etc. I am fairly comfortable buying Roosevelt dimes, Washington quarters and halves here and knowing my buy/sell prices, but I haven't sold silver dollars before. Just culling through the stacks and considering things.

thats interesting you bring them to a metal dealer to sell them. typically this is where you get the lowest price and since most US coins tend to cost more there I would think would get less than you paid for them.

@panz, I called six shops last year; the largest numismatic dealer in the metro area where I was, about four smaller shops, and one metal exchange; he paid over melt the rest paid at or below melt. I also don't think American coins cost more here; at least not compared to the four or five coin shops I've been in in the U.S. and my youtube knowledge. I think Italian and European coins cost more here. Many sellers here think their 1921 polished Morgan is worth 150 euro; but few sellers here have any interest in silver Washington quarters and Roosevelt dimes; and most sell Kennedy halves for below melt if they aren't 'FDC'; last year I was paying about half melt for a lot of these. I bought a few collections last year and paid less than melt; dealers have weighed coins - Morgans, Peace, and all pre-65 coins on a scale and sold to me at weight or weight rounded down. I don't think my posts show that coins cost more here; do they? I am asking sincerely. I don't think most of my posts discuss costs; I try to keep it about learning and collecting. I did say I limit my spending to 30 euro on morgans and 25 euro on Peace dollars and I've said a few costs a few times, but I try to avoid it.

the only thing I got out of your posts was that its more challenging to find coins that havent been touched

@panz, that's a fair takeaway... I tend/tended to post more problem coins. And I tend to vent a little when I find harshly cleaned coins.
