Quote:I was curious how you were doing on the
War Nickels.
Most are choice with good looking steps. I don't have anything spectacular. I have the 43s and 44p that are lower choice that I would upgrade. For now, they all for the most part fit into to grade set I am matching up. It won't be a challenge finding high grade examples in the future should I want to take it further.
However, it's the post 1960 Jefferson's that I am challenged with now. As Cladking has been saying for years now, there is not much out there that are being saved. Strike quality for some years is a real challenge but even just finding decent details and minimal marks in high choice is hard.
Even buying graded examples has been a bust. I have been sending back more coins then I am keeping. Sure, I can find a really nice MS66 PCGS 1961-P Jefferson with quality photos on
ebay for $45 but I am not paying that!
So I am left with
TPG's doing crap like this! Spoiler alert till Sunday night when I reveal the grades!
http://goccf.com/t/461173http://goccf.com/t/461174Or maybe I want to splurge on an FS coin. I decide to buy a PCGS 1958 MS64FS in the $20 range because regular choice raw coins are still $10+ shipped. My LCD has no real stock in moderns other than mint sets that I already spend hours searching through. I end up with FS crap like this from a
TPG?
http://goccf.com/t/460516How about a gem graded 1955-P from NGC with a 5 o'clock shadow beard under the chin that look like stalactites in a cave and a Monticello that was flattened by a pavement roller truck?

I hope this is not received as a rant. I did not spend very much on any of these coins and they are all being returned. In fact, some only cost less than $10. It is more the effort and time spent searching, choosing, purchasing, and shipping back. I definitely need to go to shows!
I do like the hunt for sure too! I am finding it very interesting the nuances in certain years in quality. I did not expect 1961 to be a tough year! Now looking at graded examples of FS's going for $3000 I realize this journey of a high choice match graded set of Jeffersons is no easy task. In fact, I think I am at the very start of where it is going to get very very challenging.
