Found this one recently. My 1976 D looks very similar to the 1955 D struck through string copied from Error-Ref.

That is an amazing find! It's incredible that the entire length of string is struck up on this coin.

The odd color surrounding some of the string impressions, and the absence of an impression in some discolored areas. leads me to suspect that, perhaps, we're looking at a set of grooves that were etched into the surface of the coin when some acid-impregnated fibers were left laying on its surface for a prolonged period. I've come across other examples over the years.

Thanks for the analysis Mike. There are definite variations in color. Lots going on with this one I've never seen before. What I found unusual is the L and I in LIBERTY. There is some movement of metal. Also I was under the impression that acid "burns/melts" uniformly. As you can see some of the channels are very narrow and some much wider.
So PMD?

NY Islander, a determination of post-strike damage would require examination under microscope.
