Hello all,
Newbie here, I am starting a proof American Silver Eagle collection for my son who was born last year. Figured I would get him a proof silver eagle each year so when he's older he'll have some cool, shiny, silver to look at with all the original packaging (I'm a sentimental collector type, I invest for my financial future elsewhere typically).
That said, it seems the last few years the Proof Silver Eagles are being minted at West Point first, then later they get minted at San Francisco as well. I've tried finding any article or statements regarding this from the mint or various forums or articles but have so far come up empty handed as to why this is.
So my question - is this some new plan going forward that the mint will be making Proof Silver Eagles at both W and S for the time being? Or does it just so happen that every year they decide "Let's mint some San Francisco Proofs because we feel like it"?
Trying to decide if I should be buying only W proofs or S proofs going forward to maximize "similarity of the collection" for my son, or if I need to just purchase both proofs each year as long as they keep minting them ;)
Thanks for any input!

The mint does what it does as long as it can sell the coins. If they could make Proofs at Philadelphia and at Denver they would. Basically no one really knows what the long term plan is. I had considered doing the proofs, but there are too many made so the chance of profits are minimal. I will say that on average San Francisco makes less coins, so if you want to maximize your profit potential, buy S mint Proofs only.
The reason that "W" mint makes more is that the West Point mint is released first and the S mint usually much later in the year. Hence people that want proofs may buy more W mints.

Well, there has been an S Proof ASE every year since 2017 (although the 2017 S Proof ASEs were only available in the LESPS or the Congratulations sets). So I'm thinking it's here to stay. If there is one "missing" in that run it would be the 2021 Type 1 S. They only made the Type 2 S Proof ASE in 2021. Quote: If they could make Proofs at Philadelphia and at Denver they would. Proofs were originally made only at the San Francisco mint from when the series started in 1986 to 1992. Then they were minted only at Philadelphia from 1993 through 2000, with the famously elusive and expensive 1995 W being the one exception. Thereafter, until 2017, it was mostly the West Point mint making proof ASEs, with a few exceptions for various finishes in special sets (i.e., Reverse Proof and Enhanced Reverse Proof). I am not aware of proof or uncirculated (burnished) ever being minted at the Denver mint.

Did you guys read my post? I said " If they could make Proofs at Philadelphia and at Denver they would." it was a hypothetical. If the mint can make money by doing a D Proof ASE, eventually it may be made.

I did. I was only replying to CelticKnots comment. I wouldn't trust the Denver mint to produce a decent looking 1/4" flat washer.

Quote: Did you guys read my post? Yes I read it as well. I was just adding some data and noting that they have minted proofs many times in Philadelphia in the past.

Correct , the 1993-2000 proofs were made in Philadelphia, but as of today only S and W make proofs, if the mint could make them again in PA and start in Denver (if there is a potential to make money) you can count on the mint to make them. Don't you all remember in 2021 we got Morgan's with O and CC privy. You might get those ASE sometime also. Back to the OP, while you can get a proof for almost all years no proof ASE was made in 2009, so a date type collection would always have a blank spot.

Thank you everyone for your input, it definitely clears things up a bit for me. Now I just have to decide if he should get 2 proofs every birthday or just one, and if only one, should they all be from the same mint (if available). Trying to predict the future can certainly make your head spin . Luckily I don't need to worry about proofs prior to 2023 since this is more of a "going forward from when he was born" kinda thing. If he wants to backfill the collection when he's older he's more than welcome to. At the end of the day he'll end up with my collection-in-process of annual bullion ASEs anyway. The proofs are just his birthday token. Thanks again!

@jtb1689 Your son would probably appreciate having both Mint's proof ASE.

I did the same thing for my son, I hope when he has them he will appreciate them for not only the value of the coins but also the memories of growing up that are attached to them.

Quote:Your son would probably appreciate having both Mint's proof ASE. If it's within your budget, I definitely agree! Quote: I did the same thing for my son, I hope when he has them he will appreciate them for not only the value of the coins but also the memories of growing up that are attached to them. Yeah Mojojojo, I agree... however I'm not buying my son any directly, knowing that he will someday inherit my collection, hopefully when he's old enough to not need to sell it for cash. As to growing up with the memories, I totally agree. For that we open the US Mint boxes together and check them out. Also he likes going through my collection with me periodically, which brings me great joy. I will say that if he ever shows interest in his own collection, I'll definitely start buying for him and helping him use his own money to make smart purchases to add to it. Tangentially, I will also say the tooth fairy may or may not be trading bullion ASEs for lost teeth... quite an upgrade from when I was a kid! They go right back into the safe and we chalk it up to his "account".
