I previously posted about finding an 1857 Snow 8 in a coin shop grab bag. I went back to the shop and bought two more grab bags at $ 20 each. Unlike the great find in my first purchase, nothing special was found except for an old black covered Indian Head cent. It has a 1909 date with what looks like an S on the reverse. I can't tell for sure, but I am thinking of cleaning the coin. Are there any suggestions of what I could clean the coin with to remove the black coating?

Jimbo, first soak it in 100% acetone for several hours. That should help get a bunch of the gunk off. In its condition, it probably wouldn't hurt to use a soft-bristled nylon toothbrush on it. The next step would be to treat it with VerdiCare. If you don't have any, buy some on ebay from seller verdicare - you'll have it in less than a week. Good luck, and I hope you're right!

Thanks for the information. I just got a small container of acetone from Home Depot and have placed the coin in a small glass container and poured some acetone in the container. Hoping for some positive results.

Be sure to cover the glass container with a lid. Rubber seals will corrode from the acetone. Acetone evaporates quickly.

agree. LONG acetone bath (don't let it all evaporate out), then a 'very soft' toothbrush (the ones for toddlers). If and only if there is an S, then Verdicare.

This coin has been through a fire. Good luck. I don't think anything will help.

I ordered VertiCare (60 ml) this morning. I pulled the coin out of my covered container and brushed with a toothbrush and some stuff was removed. I put it back in the container for a another 4 hours.
