Still trying to figure out how to photograph certain coins, particularly silver dimes and quarters in high grade. So this 1944-D was a pick spotted by a friend who let me have a go at it, and I won it for about $30. Price seemed about right for a RAW coin that looks MS66 FB. But a good deal for a DDO-001 in that condition.

The first obverse photo is what my normal lighting does to these coins. Too much glare and kinda fuzzy and doesn't show off a very nice coin very well. The second photo of the obverse shows what I ended up with, although in my opinion that photo doesn't show the luster at all and downplays how nice it is. The reverse is the only one I sorta think I got right, showing good detail and luster. Anyway maybe one step closer to figuring this end of things out.

I do not know your setup, and you may be way ahead of me in your equipment and expertise. But I do have a very simple way of forcing an iPhone (or other) to focus on a coin. Since the phones are programmed to focus on the nearest thing, you lift the coin above the surface behind it making the phone HAVE to autofocus on the coin. I use this a lot and have had a lot of people on another forum use it and comment on how well it works. The only two requirements are the note on elevating the coin and using the timer function to take the pictures.

My original inspiration for developing this was CCF member and friend Darth Morgan in this original thread from years ago:

Although I never played with the lighting like he did b/c some of his pics in that thread are just amazing.

Thanks folks! I use a regular camera for my full-coin images not a phone, but it seems like the shine coming off nice MS silver coins is still messing with with the focus. I don't really want to have one set up for most coins and a second one just for those, but might be the only way to really deal with them as they seem to need totally different lighting to get them right. Anyway, I'm going to put this one in the ANACS pile as will be a nice one to have the grade and DDO on the label.

I don;t blame you. I always thought I would like to get into coin photography also, but never got there.
