Remember to buy the coin and not the slab. Before the slabbing companies came along people did just fine verifying for themselves, to their own satisfaction, if a coin was a certain variety. It is typically very simple to do. Compare pictures to the coin! Besides that no matter the grading company they are terrible at assingning varieties to slabs. For proof, look at the essay in my signature using PCGS's own data (linked to) to show the company has over a 30% error rate for a rookie level variety attribution on Kennedy half dollars. Sometimes I have to wonder, since they get an extra fee for it, if they don't fudge it a little. The essay and research shown seems to imply that.
